Below is the uncorrected machine-read text of this chapter, intended to provide our own search engines and external engines with highly rich, chapter-representative searchable text of each book. Because it is UNCORRECTED material, please consider the following text as a useful but insufficient proxy for the authoritative book pages.

4.0 Internet Resources

A solid starting point for any transportation related Intemet search should begin with a search of the BTS home page (http:/lwww.bts.gov). The BTS was mandated by Congress through the ISTEA and was charged with the task of compiling, analyzing, and making accessible transportation information. The BTS site, established in 1995, is accessible through a variety of Intemet tools, including FOP, Gopher, and World Wide Web. Many of the BTS products can be both accessed and ordered at this site. Further information on the BTS site, as well as the listing of other transportation related Internet sources are provided below. On the Internet: Transportation Related Resources Additional sites are available and new ones are constantly being added. A majority of the Internet addresses are current as of 6/30/95, although updates have been provided where possible. 4.! Mailing Lists Mbiling Lists are used to bring people together with similar interests and allows the distribution of information pertaining to a particular-topic, as well as--enabling discussion on that topic. To join, you- must have an Intemet accessible e-mai! address which is then added to a distribution list by following a given set of instructions for that mailing list. "Generally, mailing lists are accessible with the following entries: The "subscribe" message (or other commands) is generally placed in the body of an e-mail message which is then sent to the address for the listserv/listproc/majordomo, unless otherwise noted. The "Subject:" line is generally ignored. For more information, send Be command lthelpt' to Be same address.") ' Internet Starter Kit. U.S. DeparOnent of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Formation Technology Center, p. 53, Fall 1995. 33

Telnet allows a computer user in one location to establish an on-line connection with another computer in another location. It allows the user's computer to utilize the remote computer system as if it were physically located there. Although telnet is one of the original Inter net tools and much of the information is now available on other Internet tools (e.g., World wide Web), it can still be useful for connecting to databases, library catalogs, campus directories, and a variety of information resources around the world. File Transfer Protocol COP) is an Intemet tool that lets you transfer (send and receive) files from one Intemet connected computer to another. Files capable of being transferred include text fees, software programs, graphic images, sounds, etc. The FTP sites are usually organized by directories and are a more efficient method oftransfer~ing large data files over the Intemet. Many FTP files, however, may transfer in a compressed form and need to be decompressed or '`unzipped" which require special decompression tools (e.g., PKUN~P) which are available at many FTP sites. Below is a listing of Teinet and [TP sites: Bureau of Transportation Statistics Address: fcp.bts.gov Description: FTP to this system for access to census and other transportation-related data.
