About the Author ...
Edward Berkowitz is a professor of history at George Washington University. Before coming to George Washington in 1982, he served as the first John F. Kennedy Fellow at the University of Massachusetts at Boston and as a senior staff member of the President's Commission for a National Agenda for the Eighties. He is the author, coauthor, or editor of nine other books including a biography of Institute of Medicine member Wilbur Cohen and a history of America's disability policy; he is also the author of more than 70 articles on various aspects of social welfare policy. Berkowitz was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Faculty Fellow in Health Care Finance during academic year 1987–1988. A graduate of Princeton University, Berkowitz received his Master's and Doctoral degrees in American History from Northwestern University.
