Introduction

On June 4, 1993, the National Research Council's Committee on Japan (COJ) brought together a small group of experts to help define U.S. interests in issues related to intellectual property protection and high-technology competition with Japan and to highlight possible new approaches to corporate strategy and public policy. Jim F. Martin, COJ member and director of the Palo Alto Laboratory of Rockwell International's Science Center, chaired the meeting. The workshop is part of a series that COJ is organizing with support from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund to identify U.S. national interests and policy approaches to resolving contentious issues that are emerging as a result of deeper U.S.-Japan competition and collaboration in science and technology.
