EXERCISE 8
The midair explosion of a meteor over Tunguska, Siberia in 1908 released an estimated 10,000 times the energy of the atomic bomb detonated over Hiroshima. (a) Using your answers from the above questions, how much energy in joules did the Tunguska explosion release? (b) If 65% of that energy was released in the form of heat, how many calories were released? Remember that 4.2 joules = 1 calorie. (c) How much water could that amount of energy heat up from 10 degrees Celsius to 50 degrees Celsius? Remember that the density of water is 1.0 g/cm^3. (d) If this amount of energy were released in a lake the size of the island of Manhattan, how deep into the lake would the temperature rise 40 degrees Celsius? Remember that the area of Manhattan is about 100 square km and that 1 km = 100,000 cm. |
