Charge for the Committee on Electrometallurgical Techniques for DOE Spent Fuel Treatment (Phase 3)

The Committee on Electrometallurgical Techniques for DOE Spent Fuel Treatment was charged with carrying out three tasks in phase 3 of its work:1

  1. Continue its ongoing evaluation and issue a final report at the end of the demonstration project (June 1999);

  2. Review the viability of Electrometallurgical Technology (EMT) in light of technical progress in other possible treatment technologies; and

  3. Evaluate the criteria developed by the Argonne National Laboratory/ Department of Energy (ANL/DOE) to determine the success of the demonstration project.

The following committee reports were issued by the National Research Council (National Academy Press, Washington, D.C.) in phases 1 and 2: A Preliminary Assessment of the Promise of Continued R&D into an Electrometallurgical Approach for Treating DOE Spent Fuel (1995), An Assessment of Continued R&D into an Electrometallurgical Approach for Treating DOE Spent Nuclear Fuel (1995), Electrometallurgical Techniques for DOE Spent Fuel Treatment: A Status Report on Argonne National Laboratory's R&D Activity (July 1996), Electrometallurgical Techniques for DOE Spent Fuel Treatment: Fall 1996 Status Report on Argonne National Laboratory's R&D Activity (March 1997), Electrometallurgical Techniques for DOE Spent Fuel Treatment: Status Report on Argonne National Laboratory's R&D Activity Through Spring 1997 (October 1997). The following report was issued by the National Research Council (National Academy Press, Washington, D.C.) in phase 3: Electrometallurgical Techniques for DOE Spent Fuel Treatment: Spring 1998 Status Report on Argonne National Laboratory's R&D Activity (September 1998).
