39 CHAPTER FIVE REPAIR • The substrate surface is cleaned, usually by shot blasting. • The same or similar overlay materials and application methods are used to replace the removed overlay (44). In Alberta, aging TPOs subjected to wear and loss of skid resistance have been successfully treated by applying the asphaltic chip coats over the surfaces (48). TPO repairs generally proceed as follows: • Sounding is normally conducted to find the extent of delamination. • The perimeter of the distressed area of overlay is saw cut. • The overlay inside the saw cut is removed using a small chipping hammer to minimize damage to the concrete substrate and surrounding overlay.
