The National Academies committee is chaired by Donna Shalala and composed of senior women and one man, Robert Birgeneau. The committee is conducting a nine-month study to be published in fall 2007. A strategic question was raised about the wisdom of essentially only women comprising the National Academies committee, as if the issue were a women's problem rather than a societal problem.
