He conducted research at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, taught metallurgy at Penn State for 5 years, and then joined Bell Labs in 1954, where he rose to managerial research positions that included head of the Solid State Chemical Research Department and head of the Device Materials Research Department. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1979.
