His work has addressed glacial marine processes at high latitudes, reconstruction and history of large Quaternary ice sheets, paleoceanography on high latitude shelves and adjacent seas, and paleoclimatology of arctic lakes and estuaries. He has extensive field experience in the Arctic, having worked in Alaska, Canada, Europe, Greenland, and Iceland as well as in the Ross Sea, Antarctica.

He developed the Arctic Profiling System for measuring vertical profiles of conductivity, temperature, and velocity, and other scientific equipment. His research interests include seasonal variation and hydrography of the Arctic Ocean and autonomous vehicle and hydrographic buoy measurements and related ocean processes.
