A noted earthquake engineer, he chaired the Board on Natural Disaster's Committee on Hazards Mitigation Engineering, and has served on or chaired various National Research Council committees, including the Committee on Natural Disasters. He was chairman of the California Seismic Safety Commission from July 1992 to June 1994 and is a member of the International Association for Earthquake Engineering, among other associations.
