The panel found that today US mathematical research is thriving and preeminent in the world, as demonstrated by the numerous achievements of US mathematicians in mathematics itself and in scientific, engineering, medical, and industrial applications. Key factors that have brought US mathematics to this leadership position are the strength of the research universities, the funding of mathematical research by the US government, and the ability of the United States in the last 60 years to attract foreign talent.
