The most-prominent reason for the sudden worsening of the job market in 1990 is obvious: an oversupply of new PhDs relative to the availability of tenure-track positions in colleges and universities. The number of PhDs produced by US mathematics departments began to increase in the middle 1980s, rose during the early l990s, and has shown signs of instability recently, as shown in figure 3 (see section 5.5~.
