The second course to be pursued will be to examine in depth a more limited sample of departments, chosen with the aid of the department survey results, in order to probe the complex issues surrounding the role of and need for federal training programs. From this study, a more precise understanding of the role of federal support may emerge.

Career Patterns of Federally Supported Trainees arid Fell ows The studies in this report describing the e~rpicy~rent markets for biomedical and behavioral scientists have dealt with the opportune ties for all graduates in these areas. During the next year existing data sources will be used to focus on the training and employment of those graduates who have received either predoctoral or postdoctoral support from NIH and ADAMHA research-training programs.

This will permit calculation of the cost of NIH/ADAMHA training grants per faced ty member produced or per faculty researcher. It will al so allow a comparison of the "success" rates of al ~ institutions that participated in NIH/ADAMHA training programs.
