48 Bridge demolition plan—Document or set of documents with various degrees of submittals to the standards of a state agency’s requirements. Chemical bursting—Breaking of concrete by filling drilled holes with chemicals that expand, creating large tensile stresses in the concrete. Contract plans—Design drawings prepared by the bridge owner. Demolition plans—Drawings prepared by the demolition contractor showing the means and methods for accomplishing the required demolition. Partial demolition—Type of bridge demolition in which only portions of the bridge are removed (i.e., deck removal, superstructure removal). Phased demolition—Type of bridge demolition in which portions of the bridge are removed in different stages. Project delivery methods—System used by an agency or owner for organizing and financing design, construction, operations, and maintenance services for a structure or facility by entering into legal agreements with one or more entities or parties. Total demolition—Type of bridge demolition in which the entire bridge is demolished at once. Glossary

TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 536: Bridge Demolition Practices documents practices used by bridge owners to manage and administer bridge demolition in construction projects.

Each year hundreds of bridges are rebuilt or are entirely replaced as part of highway construction projects. Bridge reconstruction or replacement work often entails demolition of part or all of the bridge structure.

Unintended events resulting in injury, project delays, and traffic disruptions can occur and have occurred during bridge demolition activities. The intention of this synthesis report is to assist in better understanding how to reduce risk associated with bridge demolition.
