He has taught computer architecture since joining the faculty in 1977 and has been chair of the Computer Science Division of the Electrical Engineenng and Computer Science Depar~anent at Berkeley. He is well known for leading the design and implementation of RISC I, the first VEST Reduced Instruction Set Computer, which became the foundation for the architecture currently used by Fujitsu, Sun Microsystems, and Xerox.
