He was chair of the National Research Council's Mapping Science Committee from 1997 to 1999 and chair of the Advisory Committee on Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences of the National Science Foundation from 2008 to 2010. His research interests center on geographic information science, spatial analysis, and uncertainty in geographic data.

The Boards oversee a range of activities, including geospatial, geographical, and mapping science; energy and mineral resources; natural hazards; deepthrough surface-earth processes; geological and geotechnical engineering; and all topics related to water resources in both the natural and built environment. Prior to joining the National Academies in 2005 as a senior program officer, she served as a research geologist, team leader, and geochronology laboratory manager for 12 years at the Geological Survey of Norway in Trondheim.

Eric started at the National Academies in 2009 and has contributed to projects in the in the earth sciences, water sciences, disaster resilience, and communication fields. Eric earned career diplomas in desktop publishing and computer graphics from the Penn Foster Career School.
