22 CHAPTER FOUR TESTING AND RESEARCH This chapter provides a summary of past and current research related to the safety performance of barrier-mounted sign supports. Although there have not been a large number of studies on this topic, several projects include results of fullscale crash tests and computational analyses that were conducted to quantify the size and shape of ZOIs or to evaluate the effect on safety performance of objects mounted within the ZOI.
