40 Conclusions and Guidance The risk of fatal aircraft accidents in the vicinity of runways is relatively large compared to those occurring in other areas of the airport. The RSA is intended to mitigate the consequences of aircraft veering off, overrunning, or undershooting a runway; RSA design standards have proven to provide good protection for these types of events.
