59 Conclusions The purpose of the project was to develop a tool or tools to allow planners, operators, and analysts to estimate the potential demand for rural intercity bus services, and that has been accomplished. However, as in all research efforts, there are limitations to the results and potential opportunities for additional research.

However its major use would be as a tool for examining policies and investments that are sure to come if current efforts to build high-speed intercity passenger rail are successful. These corridors are likely to be on routes that are currently served by unsubsidized intercity bus carriers, and it is likely that these firms will either have to change their service patterns in some way to complement the rail services or drop the services.
