The physical sciences have witnessed a substantial decline in doctoral production since 1971; the additional numbers of women graduates have not been large enough to offset the drop for male graduates from 5400 to 3600 annually. It would be instructive to examine the distribution of recent men and women doctorate recipients for the 27 mathematics departments rated as "distinguished" or "strong" to determine whether this pattern is explained by a scarcity of women students in particular departments, or whether this statistical bias exists throughout the group.
