His last active duty assignment was at the National Reconnaissance Office, where he was director for advanced systems and technology and deputy director for systems engineering.

In 1961, General Esin graduated from Dzerzhinsky Artillery Academy as mechanic engineer, and in 1983, he received a degree in command and staff and operational strategic activity at Marshal Voroshilov Military Academy of the Army's General Staff. From August 1959 to December 1996, he served in the Strategic Rocket Forces as former Chief of Staff and Vice Commander-in-Chief.

In 1991, General Yakovlev was appointed Guard Division Commander of the 60th Missile Division in the city Tatishevo-5 in the Tatischevskogo district of Saratov region where he made special efforts to improve the living conditions of resident military families. In 1993, Yakovlev was appointed Chief of Staff of the 60th Missile Division, and in 1994 was appointed as commander of the 27th Guards Rocket Army in Vladimir Oblast.
