As a final suggestion, Jones suggested that a research portfolio should expect and plan for failure by creating a portfolio of diverse avenues of problem-solving and coordinating efforts rather than pretending to control outcomes. Failure is a regular occurrence within R&D, although there will be political and economic pressure to avoid investing in endeavors that may fail.

Jones suggested that expert judgment matters a great deal but is difficult to measure. He also emphasized that while some researchers may celebrate team science as inherently valuable, he sees it simply as a necessary solution to the brutal problem of the increasingly narrowed focus in various disciplines.
