105 CHAPTER 6 – GENERAL RESEARCH APPROACH The performance of common strong-post guardrail systems subjected to each damage mode or combination of damage modes identified in Chapter 5 was evaluated. The basic research approach was similar to that used in Report 656 and involved a combination of pendulum testing and computational analyses to assess performance degradation of guardrails due to various damage modes.
