There are many other important policy issues involving transportation that require further research. We encourage readers to explore the wealth of Transportation Research Board and National Academies' publications on these issues and the many dimensions of the critical issues described therein.2 Also unlike previous editions, this edition relies heavily on metrics whenever possible to support inclusion of a topic and to show progress, or not, in addressing the societal goals identified.
