He has served as chairman of the Safe Drinking Water Committee of the NRC from 1981 to 1986, as chairman of the WHO working group on airborne carcinogens and other expert toxicology groups for the National Library of Medicine, National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety, National Institutes of Health, and the World Health Organization. He was also a member of the EPA Science Advisory Board.
