NCHRP Project 12-102 3 Summary ABC has become commonplace throughout the United States. Many projects have been completed by virtually every state. Many ABC technologies have been researched and developed; however no standard design or construction specifications have been developed. Designers are currently designing ABC projects using engineering judgement and the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design and Construction Specifications. The AASHTO Subcommittee on Bridges and Structures (SCOBS) identified the need for a national ABC specification, leading to the initiation of NCHRP Project 12-102. The main deliverable in this project is an AASHTO format Guide Specification for Design and Construction using ABC. No physical research was completed under this project. The development of the specification was based on an extensive literature search including past ABC research, state DOT project plans and specifications, state DOT manuals and reports, and the experience of the project team members who have built actual ABC projects. The project team actively engaged the AASHTO T-4 Construction Committee of the SCOBS and the Florida International University ABC University Transportation Center. One of the major goals of any research is implementation. The project team worked with the AASHTO T-4 Construction Committee during the spring of 2017 to ballot the specification for adoption by SCOBS. This work normally occurs after the completion of an NCHRP project, but there was strong need to get the document into the hands of practicing engineers. The specification was reviewed by each AASHTO SCOBS member, comments were addressed, and the specifications were adopted at the 2017 Annual Meeting. The final specifications are not included in this report since they will be published by AASHTO in the near future. There are currently a number of on-going research projects regarding ABC. The AASHTO T-4 Construction Committee will be working with several other AASHTO technical committees over the coming years to incorporate this new research in the specifications.

TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Web-Only Document 242: Recommended AASHTO Guide Specifications for ABC Design and Construction documents the results of a synthesis of past research regarding Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC), leading to the development of Guide Specifications for Accelerated Bridge Construction. Part 1 of the report includes Design Specifications for ABC. Part 2 includes construction specifications. All current ABC technologies are covered in the specifications. The outline of the specifications lends itself to the addition of future technologies, should they arise.
