His research interests currently include the analysis of data objects associated with the contents of the Internet and data analyses associated with computer simulations. He has developed information retrieval methods, exploratory analyses algorithms, and software for these, notably for image and text data. He has contributed to the development of a variety of information visualization methods. Currently, Dr. Whitney is exploring data analysis challenges associated with agent-based models and developing methodologies for exploring and retrieving structured information such as transactions and relations.
