Below is the uncorrected machine-read text of this chapter, intended to provide our own search engines and external engines with highly rich, chapter-representative searchable text of each book. Because it is UNCORRECTED material, please consider the following text as a useful but insufficient proxy for the authoritative book pages.

89 The original proposal stated that the project team would compile a matrix of microgrid assess ment tools and that the tools could be characterized using a range of different features. The approach to analyzing the models has been updated and refined during the project based on results of the research and interviews with experts in the field. Table E1 lists the originally proposed char acterization criteria and summarizes whether they were incorporated in the final analysis. A P P E N D I X E Findings Regarding Original Scope of Work Criteria from Original Proposal Status Financial considerations Financial considerations are integrated into the techno-economic tools section. Relevance to airports and mission-critical operations Relevance to airports was one of the initial screening criteria used to down select the models reviewed. Ability to analyze different stages of project development This criterion was integrated into the discussions of when decision makers might use the different models and the types of questions that the models are appropriate to answer. Generation technologies and storage Most of the models have similar capabilities - key distinctions about energy technologies are highlighted in the relevant sections. Interconnection and “island” guidance Islanding modeling capability is discussed in terms of both techno-economic and power systems tools. Interconnection is not something that is covered in any of the tools surveyed. Communication and controls The capability of modeling control schemes is discussed as a screening criterion for the tools surveyed. Communication modeling is discussed to some extent in terms of economic dispatch strategies. Physical and cyber security None of the models had specific functionalities related to physical or cyber security, although there are ways to reflect security considerations in some of the models. The additional costs of physical and cyber security, for example, could be built into the techno-economic models. Configuration and optimization The configuration of a microgrid is discussed in the techno-economic tools section. Method of presenting information The information flow into and out of the tools is discussed extensively. Table E-1. Findings regarding original scope of work.

Awareness of the vulnerability of the country’s existing electrical system has increased with the frequency of short-term blackouts and long-term utility outages. Power outages impact airport operations by causing flight delays, extended layovers, disruptions in cargo operations, loss of revenue, and limitations in airports’ ability to provide emergency support.

The TRB Airport Cooperative Research Program's ACRP Research Report 228: Airport Microgrid Implementation Toolkit addresses site-specific criteria for airports of all types and sizes.

The implementation toolkit is a suite of reference materials, including an online tool that can be used to obtain an analysis and determine feasibility of a microgrid for your airport.
